Volunteering – Arboretum

Group Leader:  Mary Lou Goodbody

Needwood DFAS were asked several years ago, when Christine Price was chairman, if we would like to form a team to record the memorials at the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas.  A small group of us teamed up with David Brass and some of his North Stafforshire DFAS members and began the recordings under Charlie Bagot Jewett.

We began by recording the 600 plus platelets and any memorials in the area in front of the Chapel as it was to be incorporated in the new buildings.

We then began on a list of memorials carefully recording measurements, inscriptions and materials used and also taking a photograph all of which would go on a data base headed by John McGahan.  To date we have recorded approximately 300 with another list of about 60 pending.  Our little group gradually decreased to just Keith Goodbody and myself, which was fine, as we could pop over on a nice day and do a few more.

As John McGahan has about two years of our work to enter up, we are not rushing during the winter months, as steel rules, cold winds and frozen fingers  make it difficult to cope.   So, until the weather warms up, we remain in front of the blazing fire!

If any member would like to join us, please let me know – you will be most welcome.

Volunteering – Library Project

The Cathedral library project continued to progress, with Keith and Mary Lou Goodbody and Claire Townsend, the Cathedral Librarian, we put in many hours of work cleaning and repairing books and manuscripts.

But, as most of you will know, the library is closing during 2017 for urgent repairs to the Chapter House roof. (As a society we made a £100 donation to the Repair Fund Project).  So the work has stopped.  But ….

For your interest there are over 8000 books to be individually wrapped in acid proof paper and then bubble wrapped, boxed and carried down 33 steps of the spiral staircase for transport to Cheshire!

When the project restarts we will let you know.
